NAMI Basics is an education program available free of charge for parents and other family caregivers who provide care for youth, pre-teens, teens, young adults who are experiencing mental health symptoms. During the program topics discussed will include how to develop confidence and stamina to support your child with compassion. You will learn about different types of mental health care professionals, available treatment options and therapies in the area. The course will help prepare for crisis situations, better understand how to navigate the public mental health care, school, and juvenile justice system. NAMI Basics offer parents and caregivers the unique opportunity to quickly realize they're not alone. Recovery is a journey, and there is hope.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free, eight-session educational program for adults with mental health conditions who are looking to better understand themselves and their recovery. Taught by trained leaders with lived experience, this program includes activities, discussions and informative videos. However, as with all NAMI programs, it does not include recommendations for treatment approaches. NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a safe, confidential space. The course provides an opportunity for mutual support and growth. Experience compassion and understanding from people who relate to your experiences. This is a place to learn more about recovery in an accepting environment.

This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.

Managing Challenging behaviors workshop
NAMI Four County will offer a 2-hour workshop for parents, grandparents, caregivers, or volunteers who work with youth who may have disruptive, challenging behaviors. Participants will discuss practical, research-based action plan to prevent these challenging behaviors and promote positive behavior. Peer led instruction the class is ideal for parents, caregivers, teachers, volunteers and healthcare workers that find themselves with situations and behaviors that seem unmanageable.

Adult Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training that is sponsored by NAMI Four County and taught by instructors who have completed a week-long training presented by Mental Health First Aid USA, the organization that developed the program. Symptoms to watch for and the approach needed when dealing with adults are different.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training that is sponsored by NAMI Four County and taught by MVGC instructors who have completed a training through Mental Health First Aid USA. Participants will be introduced to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in youth and adolescents. The program builds understanding of the importance of early intervention and teaches individuals how to help in crisis, recognize signs of someone experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions, and provide initial help and connect youth to professional, peer, social and self-help care.

Healthy You
A presentation on the mind-body connection conducted by Shirley Fry to recognize the symptoms of mental illness, understand our brain health, learn helpful ways to support those with mental illness, discuss changes in mental wellbeing, and execute strategies for self-care in ways to improve both mental and physical health.
